How to lay tiles on the floor?

There are several techniques to lay tiles on the floor. To get the job done right, pick the right tools, check the video tutorials, choose your method and follow our tips.

Tips:

  • Make sure that the subfloor is flat, levelled, clean and not porous. Add a prime coating if needed.
  • You may lay tiles on existing tiles or lino only if it's flat and in good condition.
  • Regularly use the level to make sure the tiles are properly layered.
  • For small surfaces, glue the tile rather than the floor. For tiles larger than 20 cm, glue both the tile and the floor.
  • Soak the tiles in water (10 minutes) to ease the cutting.
  • Use knee pads if you intend to work a long time.
  • Leave the tiles 24 hours before making the joints.

Key steps:

  1. Remove all doors and base boards.
  2. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and even.
  3. Draw the reference lines on the floor.
  4. Start from the point where the two lines meet, lay out a row of tiles along the longest chalk line.
  5. Use a spacer between each tile.
  6. Repeat along the other perpendicular lines.
  7. Place the cut tiles near the walls.
  8. Remove the tiles.
  9. Using a large trowel, spread the mortar along one edge of the layout line.
  10. Lay two to three tiles at a time. Press the tiles firmly.
  11. Use tile spacers to ensure even joints.
  12. Use a level to check that the tiles are at the same height.
  13. If needed, use the rubber mallet to tap on uneven tiles.
  14. Before the mortar sets, remove the spacers as you work.
  15. When the entire surface is tiled, leave it to dry for 24 hours.
  16. Lightly dampen the tiles with a sponge and clean water.
  17. Pour some of the grout directly onto the tiles and work it into the joints.
  18. Remove the excess grout with a damp sponge.
  19. After 48 hours, apply grout sealer to the joints.
  20. Apply a second coat 30 minutes later.
  21. After 10 days, coat the joints with silicone sealer.
  22. When dry, clean the tiles with a soft dry cloth.

Key steps:

  1. Find the exact centre of the room.
  2. Draw a cross at the intersection.
  3. Take the first tile and peel the backing off.
  4. Put the corner of the tile right in the middle of the cross and set the tile.
  5. Take the next tile and match the two corners up.
  6. Repeat the process across the entire floor.
