How to build a drywall?

This article will give you a few advices and tips on how to build a drywall. We've also selected tutorials to help you out, so you'll see the different techniques and supplies you can choose from.

Whether you'd like to create a new room or separate an existing one, these videos describe all the steps you'll go through, from the frame building to the plasterboard installation.

Our tips before you start:

  • Use water repellent boards for the bathroom. As for the kitchen or near a fireplace, use a fireproof material to avoid any risk of burning.
  • To improve thermal and phonic insulation, you can fix two plasterboards together.
  • Use a depth adjustable electric drill to ease the installation.
  • Regularly check the levels throughout the assembling and reset the boards if needed.
  • Apply a porous material undercoat before painting or papering the plaster board.

RONA- How to Build an Interior Wall

Tools and supplies:

  • Chalk line
  • Circular saw
  • Drill with screw attachments
  • Drywall panels
  • Electronic stud finder
  • Hammer
  • Joint compound
  • Kiln dried lumber (S-dry) wall studs (2"×4"×8" or 2"×3"× 8")
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush and roller
  • Pencil
  • Plumb bob
  • Sealer
  • Small nails

  • Stepladder
  • Taping knife
  • Wood screws- 3 ¼"
  • Working gloves

Key steps:

  1. Find the alignment of the ceiling joists along the intended line of the new wall.
  2. Define and mark the drywall line on the ceiling.
  3. Repeat for the floor joist.
  4. Install, cut and screw top and floor plates.
  5. Measure and cut the vertical studs to the required length.
  6. Solidify the edge of the wall by screwing a second stud against the last stud from the inside.
  7. Install the cross studs.
  8. Screw the sheets of drywall into the studs or the cross studs.

How to Frame a Window and Door Opening


  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw

Key steps:

  1. Mark the top and bottom plates where regular studs are going to be.
  2. Take all measures of your door and/or window and repeat.
  3. Cut and assemble all the pieces (plates, studs, header).
  4. Now you're ready to fix the plasterboard.

Part 3- How to cut and fix plasterboard


  • Cutter
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Electric drill
  • Nails
  • Screws

Key steps:

  1. Measure the height of the plasterboard and mark it.
  2. Cut along your mark but don't go through the whole board.
  3. Open the crack and cut to separate the board.
  4. Measure the plasterboard for width. Repeat as earlier.
  5. Put it in position and fix it with screws.

Drywall Installation: Install Insulation


  • Insulation roll
  • Measuring tape.
  • Cutter

Key steps:

  1. Measure and cut the insulation to the right sizes so it fills all the empty parts of the wooden frame.
  2. Fix the plasterboard on one side of the frame.
  3. Install the insulation pieces from the opposite side.
  4. Cover the with plasterboard.
