How to make a light garland or a paper lantern?

This selection of videos will show you how to make paper lanterns or light garlands. Made with fabric or paper, these lights can be suspended indoors, outdoors and a large paper lantern may even fly.

This article gathers different methods to make paper lanterns or customise a light garland. These models take various shapes and are made out of paper or tulle, cut or folded (Origami). The last video is about how to make a large paper lantern that will fly like a hot-air balloon.

Tip:

  • If making a light garland, attach the light bulbs to each paper lantern.

DIY Light Tulle Garland

Tools and materials:

  • Scissors
  • Wire cutter
  • White electric garland
  • Tulle
  • White chenille stems

Key steps:

  1. Cut the chenille stems into little pieces.
  2. Wrap the tulle around a light.
  3. Secure with a piece of chenille stem.
  4. Repeat until you've reach the end of the light garland.

How to make an Origami Garland

Tools and materials:

  • Light cardboard or heavy paper sheets
  • Ruler
  • Floss or quilting thread
  • Needle

Key steps:

  1. Cut a piece of paper in square shape.
  2. Fold it in half to get a triangle.
  3. Flatten the fold with the ruler.
  4. Open the piece of paper and fold it in half the other way.
  5. Flatten the fold.
  6. Fold it into thirds.
  7. Take a flap and tuck it in the other one.
  8. Take one of the top pieces and fold it down to the centre.
  9. Open it up and tuck it inside.
  10. Fold both bottom parts in half.
  11. Open the lantern up and wrap the remaining piece as shown in the video.
  12. Use a needle to pass the thread through the lantern.

Tools and materials:

  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon
  • Colour cardboard A4

Key steps:

  1. Fold the cardboard in the middle.
  2. Fold one more time then fold every side.
  3. Open and fold these strips in accordion shape.
  4. Fold the strips in half across the length to mark the middle.
  5. Staple the centre with two staples.
  6. Cut a triangle shape at the top parts.
  7. Staple the border edges.
  8. Punch two holes in the star.
  9. Repeat for different colour stars.
  10. Thread the ribbon through the holes.

How To Make A Chinese Paper Lantern | Fun Kids Activities

Tools and materials:

  • Stapler
  • Brush
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Sheets of A4 paper

Key steps:

  1. Cut off a strip at the end of the paper sheet to make the handle.
  2. Fold the large part of the paper in half.
  3. Cut long incisions.
  4. Fold the paper to make a tube.
  5. Secure with staples at both sides.
  6. Attach the handle with staples.

How to make a sky lantern

Tools and materials:

  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Wire cutter
  • Light wire
  • Butter paper
  • Glue stick
  • Cotton thread
  • Paper towels
  • Candle wax

Key steps:

  1. Measure out two lengths of butter paper (160 cm).
  2. Glue the two pieces of paper together, overlapping the join by 15 mm.
  3. Glue the two ends together the same way.
  4. Add design if you want.
  5. Fold the cylinder into quarters and measure.
  6. Add 425 mm and cut a square.
  7. Fold the edges up 15 mm all around and cut out the corners.
  8. Glue the lid to the top opening.
  9. Flatten the bottom opening and measure.
  10. Cut a piece of light wire and join it overlapped by 20mm with cotton to make a ring for the bottom opening.
  11. Cut 10 mm slits every 50 mm around the bottom opening.
  12. Glue the wire ring.
  13. Cut two lengths of wire to criss-cross over the end.
  14. Pop one end through and fold over.
  15. Leave the other end to thread the 'fuel cell'.
  16. Fold two paper towels into quarters and soak them in candle wax.
  17. Leave to set then thread them into the wire centre.
